Carleton Undergraduate Tournament, 3.8.03

Results: Northwestern A (Wonder Boys)
(Robert Flaxman, Jan Zasowski)

Many interesting things happened this weekend at Carleton.  I will now run down some of them in chronological order:
    * Fun trip up with Drew, Shannon, and Mike S., one of the better cars you could ask for.  We thankfully got an Enterprise car so we didn't have to spend seven hours listening to the radio; no one else brought CDs so I got to control the music rundown, which was pretty cool.
    * We stopped at a Culver's in Wisconsin and the guy behind the counter kept teasing me and Mike.  I had my Jaguars shirt on and he was like, "Go back to Jacksonville!"  Then Mike goes up with an NU shirt and the guy goes, "Northwestern?  Even worse."  We later found out the order: Jacksonville is bad, but New Jersey is worse, and Chicago is even worse than that.
    * The one problem with the trip up was the crappy Mapquest directions, which told us to turn onto a road that apparently doesn't exist.  We got all the way to Rochester before we finally decided we'd missed the turn, thus adding about 80 miles onto the trip.
    * Jan, Shannon, Mike and I got free lunches on Saturday because of a generous individual in the dining hall who had a lot of extra meals.  We also screwed around with the comments board; I added one suggesting ostrich eggs and wildebeest meat, and Jan delivered a rant about coffee in response to someone who was complaining about it being too strong.  Still, neither could top the one that was already there, where someone demanded more croutons, adding "Is there really a shortage of stale bread?
    * Jan put up 160 points against Iowa State A... that was just insane.
    * Now, the lamest thing: once again, Jan and I were there as long as anyone else, and once again we finished fourth.  My personal stats were also well down this year, which would have been an easier pill for me to swallow had we won something.
Favorite Tossup: I guess Patrick Roy.  Basically "An 11-1 loss to Detroit caused him-" *buzz*  I also liked the Ivy League one.  "The oldest of its members was founded in 1636-" *buzz* Not that hard, but kinda fun.
Favorite Bonus: U.S. territories, things in Australia's Northern Territory, foreign-born NBA players were all good.  I'll go with the one in the last round, though, "Asian bodies of water."  The first two were Caspian Sea and Aral Sea, but the third was "this largest lake in Turkey, a salt lake with no apparent outlet."  When I correctly answered Lake Van, it was another of those moments where everyone in the room sort of stares at you, and I always enjoy that, specifically when it comes to geography.
Worst Neg: Most annoying neg was "sexual reproduction" for "asexual reproduction."  I buzzed in right after "parthenogenesis," which was pretty early in the question, and said "reproduction."  When I got prompted, I flaked out and said the obviously wrong one.
Most Ludicrous Power: Probably Antigone.  They had already said that she hanged herself.
Best Faux Knowledge: You probably won't see me get a lot of music questions, but I got oboe off "it comes from the French for 'high wood.'"  I don't know what everyone else was doing, but I tuned out the rest of the question sounding it out.  "Haut bois?  Haut bois, haut bois, o-bois..." *buzz*
Most Disappointing Moment: Losing in the third place game for the second straight year... to a team we beat 470-175 in the round robin!   I was pissed about this before because I knew we'd beaten them, but I didn't remember by how much until I just looked at the sheet.  Goddammit.
