DePauw DUCK Bowl, 2.8.04
Results: Northwestern A
(Colby Burnett, Robert Flaxman, Justin Moles, Alma)
Alma came down for the weekend in large part because I
asked her to play Duck Bowl with us, since neither Bisberg nor Anthony could be there and
I didn't have much sense for the Trash prowess of anyone who was going. So even
though I say "Northwestern A" above, we were not entirely Northwestern.
That said, Duck Bowl was a fun time, obviating my concern that theme packets were going to
mess us around. As it happened, I was the #2 scorer at the tournament with better
than 100 points per round, and we came within a question of beating the Keenan/Gerbil
super-team in both our matches against them (and within three questions total, one in each
of three rounds, of winning the tournament outright). It should be explained that
theme packets work differently. First, they're all tossups, no bonuses. Then,
for a standard four-person team, two people play on one packet in a given round. The
scores from the two packets are then combined and we see which team won based on total
points. This has made my normal work of depicting scores below kind of a bitch (I'm
only going to show total scores on the round-by-round scores page), but I think my
solution will work out. Five people are going to read this anyway and at least one
of them was there.
Favorite Tossup: Quite a number, as usual. Getting
Steven Spielberg in the directors round off a list of films he made when he was 12 was
pretty fun; guess that Spielberg class paid off, eh?
Favorite Bonus: For the first time ever, this section
is obsolete.
Worst Neg: The thing about theme rounds is you can
sometimes anticipate an answer going in. I did this and managed to neg on two of
them, psyching myself out of A Few Good Men in the Christopher Guest round (I
said Malice, his other 1992 drama) and confusing the lyrics to Goodbye Yellow Brick
Road with those of Honky Cat in the 1973 songs round. The former was
more annoying because had I gotten it and everything else gone the same, we would have won
that round.
Most Disappointing Moment: The three times we came
within one question of winning, two of which were due to negs of mine. I was
disappointed at our behavior after the second Keenan/Gerbil round, though; Alma and I had
taken down one half of them, 155-60, and when we came out Colby said he and Justin had
lost by 80. Wild celebration began, at which point it was discovered that they had
lost 120-20, not 100-20, and thus we had in fact lost by five. I'm pretty happy we
got so close to that team both times, but I was kind of embarrassed at the way we acted,
especially since it turned out that we had lost.
Holy Crap: I already mentioned that I was the #2
scorer; this was helped in no small part by the first three playoff rounds, in which I put
up a total of 49 tossups (more than a third of my total points in all 13 rounds).
The highlight of the day, and what might have been the highlight of my Trash career were
it not for top five at nationals last year and outright winning the 2001 regional, was the
film directors round, in which I converted 23 of 24 tossups, with only Otto Preminger
falling dead, to win 230-0. To be fair, I was playing only against Mike Philpy, and
things might have been different with more of a team on either side, but I still think I
would have put up double digits on that packet against anybody. Besides, I
shouldn't have to apologize for the format.
Quotes of the Day: Philpy, coming into the room,
announced that this game should be called "Philpy Goes Down," to which Amanda,
moderating, replied "Is that like Igby Goes Down?" Philpy then idly
wondered who directed that - I thought for a second and answered "Burr Steers."
This got slight stares. An even better quote came in the previous round, with
Matthew Marjan announcing, "Okay, we're doing 'Your Mom,'" the packet being
about people with famous parents. Best quote, though, came after the directors
round, when Philpy walked into the hall and told the members of his team who had played
the other packet, "I hope you won by 235."
