Illinois Novice Tournament at UIUC, 11/17/01

Results: Northwestern Galaxy of Prawns (NU A)
(Colby Burnett, Robert Flaxman, Kate Rigot, Noah Rothschild)

Novice tournaments, so far as I know, do not have unified eligibility rules.  In the case of Junior Bird (the Haynes Lee alterna-name for this tournament... now there's a reference no one will get), it was "less than two years of college experience" - so even though I'm a Div I player in NAQT, I could go to this.
As it turned out, Kate was the only other sophomore there (I'm pretty sure our other six were freshmen... at the very least she was the only other returning member), but Colby's pretty good (I think he finished seventh in scoring in the prelims; I was eleventh, although actually the scoring was screwed up because they had me at 23 and 0 when I was actually at 27 and 1) and with Kate filling in stuff like music and science and Noah playing a pretty admirable fourth for a freshman stuck on the A team at his first tournament, we did pretty well.

We went 7-2 through the preliminaries, good enough to earn second in the B division (also known as the "Tribe of Bonus-Mining Goblins Division"), although we only went 1-2 in the playoffs (defeating, amazingly, the team that finished second for one of their just two losses on the day), placing us fifth overall.
    Favorite Tossup:
Hard to say, as there were actually quite a few I liked.  I guess it'd have to be New York Giants (all that had been read of the question was "Merkle's Boner kept this team from going to the 1908 World Series"), since it would have been a power if they'd existed and I genuinely impressed Hairboy.
Favorite Bonus: Again, too close to call.  It's between the Simpsons one and the Tintin one, both of which, of course, I 30d the shit out of.  I guess I'd have to go with Tintin, simply because I know so much about it and it's never asked (although it was the answer to the 19th tossup in the finals at TRASH Regionals), even though the answers were "Tintin," "Hergé," and "Captain Haddock," which in Simpsons terms would be like if the answers were "Homer," "Matt Groening," and "Bart."
Worst Neg: Since I only negged once all day, I guess it'd have to be saying "Mentor" when the answer was really "Nestor," although I think that's relatively legit.
