The Lamp of Ignorance

"Good people, bad negs." - J. Zasowski

2001 at Ann B. Davis, Tyler got a weird broken lamp as a "prize."  He left it in the car, but Pete preserved it for posterity.   Beginning with 2002's MLK/ABD, NU Quiz Bowl began handing out the lamp as a "reward" for the worst neg at a tournament.  Below follows the award by tournament, starting with the earliest and going to the most recent.

Bad Practice Negs

Justin: Answer given, "Mars Cheese Castle;" right answer, "Taliesin."

Anthony: Answer given, "Monty Python's Flying Circus;" right answer, "First Crusade."

What Made Them Bad?

2002 MLK: They had said "Bennigan's" in the question.

2002 Elvis: This was after two parts of a key story in Marjan's life were given separately; basically, in the early 1990s a mujaheddin fighter jumped into the cage, apparently to show off - Marjan bit his arm off and the guy died in the hospital.  The man's friend came back and threw a grenade into the cage, blinding Marjan in one eye and doing some other damage.  The word "cage" was used in the question well before Jan rang in, and Marjan was described as having "eaten" the mujaheddin, which should tell you, if nothing else, that it wasn't a human being.

2002 NAQT Sectionals: This was after the answer had been described as a common pursuit of the aristocracy in years past that had only very recently been banned.

2002 CUT: Drew rang in because of "Carolina campaign" and "Clinton," but apparently he missed one of the years given, which was 1789.   (The Clinton being talked about was British general Sir Henry Clinton.)

2002 Duck Bowl: Well, the two are virtual opposites, for one thing.   But this was made all the more hilarious by the circumstances - it was the last round of the day, late in the packet, and Colby, who had not negged yet that day, had just finished saying there should be a sniper award for most tossups without a neg (clearly something he was in line for).  Immediately after that, he negged.
