"LUC, I Am Your Father" - Trash at Loyola, 10/18/03
Results: The Full Fine Plus a Small Large Lateness Penalty

(Mike Bisberg, Colby Burnett, Robert Flaxman, Justin Moles)
Trash is the only thing we ever have that much of a
chance of winning, so when we go to a tournament with only five teams, there had better be
some real dinosaurs involved for us not to finish right at the top. It may sound
hubristic, but I would be dishonest if I didn't say that I thought we had an excellent
chance to win coming into this tournament.
And that was, in fact, what happened. Despite dropping both of
the double-round-robin matches to DePauw A, we finished second and rebounded to beat them
in the finals. Pretty sweet deal. As cool as my last win (2001 TRASH Regionals)?
Well, not quite. But fun nonetheless. Hey, I always love Trash - winning is
like a cherry on top, if I liked cherries.
Favorite Tossup: The Dan Brown one in the playoffs was pretty
good. (Give his schooling, and then say "His first novel, Digital Fortress,"
which only happens to be sitting on my floor.) I also liked the Lies and the
Lying Liars Who Tell Them one, and the Donald Kaufman one.
Favorite Bonus: My stone-cold answers of Kirsten
Dunst, Edward Herrmann, and Cary Elwes as the actors who played Marion Davies, William
Randolph Hearst, and Thomas Ince in The Cat's Meow drew a "wow" from
DePauw Matt, scorekeeping at the time. I always like doing that. However, the
best was "For 40 points, you can eat it," and I said "Twinkies."
Forty! We'd had it done to us before, but never done it. The 30 was
ridiculously easy anyway, but come on. Forty!
Worst Neg: Has to be during the TV audio round, when I
said "Homeboys in Outer Space" for "Dark Angel." I actually went
0-for-2 for -10 points in that round, which is probably the worst round ever for someone
who managed to still lead the tournament in scoring.
Most Annoying Moment: After rebounding from a 170-0
deficit after DePauw A nailed the first six tossups in our first game with them, we ended
up losing 285-280 when they got the last question and 30d an easy bonus.
Rule #1: If You See Something The Night Before the Tournament
and Think, "That Might Come Up," The Odds are Excellent That It Will: A
"Captain Underpants" book was sitting near the checkout at Borders last night,
the only way I'd have had any chance in hell of getting that question.
I Just Don't See That Many: Even though I know random
things about a lot of movies, "the complete screenplay" is rarely one of those
things. So I only put up 15 points in the movie audio round (Biz, as I somewhat
suspected, steamrolled it, and then absolutely dominated the TV theme song round).
Apparently I Can Only Do This at Tournaments With Seven Teams
or Fewer: Along with 2002
Duck Bowl, this was the second collegiate tournament I led in scoring, with 40.38 in
the round robin. And that's with mediocre-to-crappy performances in the two audio
rounds.
