TRASHionals at U of Michigan, 4/13-14/02
Results: Truth or Yinka Dare (Northwestern)
(Colby Burnett, Robert Flaxman, Tyler Johnson, Andy Seputis)
The one thing that really bugs me about TRASHionals is
its insistence on using scoring systems from defunct pro sports leagues. Last year
it was NASL, which actually didn't hurt too much as we finished with 41 points, enough to
sneak us into the first group and allowing us to finish no worse than 12th (which we did,
losing all five Sunday matches to finish 7-9).
This year they used CBA scoring. Despite finishing 7-4 on
Saturday again, we finished just sixth in our division (Bonaduce), which only got
us into the third playoff bracket (Larry), thus guaranteeing we would finish no higher
than 13th.
Which we did, winning all four Sunday matches (a much better feeling
than last year, I assure you). But going 11-4 and finishing 13th was somehow not
that gratifying.
Favorite Tossup: As per my TRASH usual, there were plenty.
Favorite, though, was: "He was a purse snatcher. My father ran into
him-" *BUZZ*. Rollo Tomasi. (L.A. Confidential reference. If you
don't get it, well, I'll let you borrow the DVD.)
Favorite Bonus: The Back to the Future trilogy one was
pretty nice. Energy to the flux capacitor? 1.21 gigawatts. Team BTTF2
allegedly predicted winning the 1997 World Series? Florida Marlins. (Of
course, this is easily debunked. 1) The team in the movie is Miami, not Florida.
2) Miami doesn't win; they lose to the Cubs. 3) Well, it's 2015, not 1997.
Duh.) Actress who played Jennifer in BTTF1, before Elisabeth Shue
took over the role? Claudia Wells. Yeah, I'll take your 30 points, but I'm not
gonna plow your driveway.
Worst Neg: I only had two, back to back as the last
point buzz of Round Three and the first of Round Four. The second one was a total
hose ("Roald Dahl was co-screenwriter," so I leap in with "You Only Live
Twice." No... it's "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang." Yeah, Dahl didn't
co-write "You Only Live Twice," but come on.), so I guess it's
the first, where I said "Yellow Submarine" for "Stars on 45." I
buzzed because the question mentioned getting people to supply the Beatles' voices, and
the cartoon Beatles weren't voiced by themselves. On the other hand, the question
had already mentioned the prominent involvement of a member of Golden Earring. So
yeah.
Bitchin'est Moment: I didn't expect to take any
individual scoring honors, seeing as how there are people here who are just sick,
I don't do as well at official TRASH as at packet-submission Trash, and Tyler tends to
shadow me (and outscore me). However, I finished tenth, which was cool, though I
think they credited me with more points than I actually had (we'll see if/when official
stats come out), scoring a cool tossup more per round than Tyler, or something like that,
which was pretty surprising. I did roll off some pretty big rounds, though,
including 80 against Rutgers, 70 against CMU, and 60 in our "upset" of Georgia.
Most "Small World" Moment: As I mentioned,
Rutgers was there. One of the guys was a senior who remembered me from the 2000 RUAT ("Flaxman,
right?"). Even more amazing, they were all from New Jersey - so I asked where,
and the third guy said, "West Orange."
Redemption Moment: After choking basically every audio
tossup last year, I only rang in on two this time, and nailed them both. I got
Michelle Branch's "Everywhere" on basically the first note, and was quickest to
the draw on the Matrix quote.
