Trash Regionals @ U of Minnesota-Twin Cities, 11/10-11/01
Results: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wasteland (Northwestern)
(Lauren Arestie, Robert Flaxman, Tyler Johnson, Andy Seputis)
Un. Be. Lievable. That's the only way
I could describe this tournament, in which we basically made like the 2001 Bears before
Sunday or the 2000 Northwestern team before the Alamo Bowl.
After going 9-3 in the regular rounds and securing the second seed
(including an amazing 300-195 win after trailing 165 to -5 in round fourteen) for the
playoffs, we somehow managed to win the tournament, winning both our semifinals and finals
matches on the very last question.
I take you now to Room 115 in Blegen Hall on the U of M Twin Cities
campus. It's the semifinals of TRASH regionals, and The Lion, the Witch, and the
Wasteland has just tied Jason, Dan, Dana et al at 200 on the nineteenth tossup. The
twentieth tossup involves "the Church of Satan" and is not answered by either
team, although one of JDDEA comes up with it a few seconds too late. We move on to
the 21st tossup - sudden death. A neg loses it, a tossup wins it.
"It's not Varsity Blues, but it did star James van der
Beek and Ali Larter. It's not American Pie, but it did star Jason Biggs and
Shannon-" Buzz. It's me, and it's Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
Boy, did I enjoy that - we move to the finals.
Now we're up against Tia and the Trashmen, Minus Tia (don't ask, I
don't know either), a team we'd already lost to twice. Two questions left, we're
down 70 points. I get tossup 19, Tintin (how long have I been waiting for that
to come up?); we 30 the bonus. Now it's 210-180 on the 20th tossup. Tyler gets
it, Morris the Cat. We need 20 to tie, 30 to win - and we'd been getting shitty
bonuses all round. This, however, is a sports bonus - it's about the Braves' win in
the 1991 NLCS. Francisco Cabrera, Sid Bream, Javy Lopez - good night, game over,
drive home safely.
We won! We won! We won! But, uh,
unfortunately, since I bet on the other team, we won't be going out for pizza.
Favorite Tossup: Obviously Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
Favorite Bonus: Had to be the Braves bonus, just
because that won us the tournament.
Worst Neg: As usual, none were awful although
a couple were sort of dumb on my part. South Florida for Troy State takes the cake
because I knew Troy State two words later.
(Oh by the way, we got an automatic bid to TRASHionals thanks to this.)
