TRASH Midwest Regionals at U of I, 11.10.02
Results: Mostly Circus Animals, Some Filler (Northwestern A)
(Colby Burnett, Robert Flaxman, Tyler Johnson, Andy Seputis)
TRASH Regionals this year was a little disappointing.
We tied for second place, but could easily have gone undefeated (and thus
"won") as we lost our three matches by a total of 60 points. And
that's with having lost one by 40. In addition, I don't think any of us played that
great... I managed to finish seventh in overall scoring despite going for just 28.33 ppg.
I definitely don't play TRASH as well as Trash. It's just the way the
questions skew.
Favorite Tossup: As with all Trash, there were a few.
I'll say Tuesday Morning Quarterback, Leonard Nimoy, 0:01, Tom Glavine, Mille Bornes, and
John Ratzenberger.
Favorite Bonus: Two I wrote down - supporting
characters from The Birdcage (Christine Baranski, Dianne Wiest, and Hank Azaria),
which was all me, and Muppets appearing in Weezer's "Keep Fishin'" video
(Animal, Pepe, Penguins).
Worst Neg: Most of my negs were very frustrating
because I would have gotten them on the next word in a couple of cases and in one
just got jacked - "Pluto Nash" vs. "The Adventures of Pluto Nash."
Rough. Also "Clerks" for "Army of Darkness" (they both
have alternate endings, okay?), "Jeffrey Maier and Derek Jeter" for
"Jeffrey Maier and Tony Tarasco," and "Sam Raimi" for "Peter
Jackson" (yes, they both put the same car in a lot of their films). The
farthest off one would probably be "catcher's mitt" for "duckpin."
I don't even know what duckpin is - apparently it's some half-assed bowling
substitute - but I maintain this was fair as they talked about it first being used at
Wilbert Robinson and John McGraw's camp. Robinson was a catcher. Apparently
you can know too much for your own good.
Reading CNN Pays Off: I got "red hair" based
on a question about people with it needing more anesthesia, something I randomly read in
the health section on CNN.com.
I Swear, I Like Girls: I got a tossup on Billy's
Hollywood Screen Kiss, which I assure you I have never seen. (Hey, I never saw Murder
By Numbers or Captain Corelli's Mandolin and I got those too.) This is
like at TRASHionals 2001, when there was a Kiss Me Guido tossup in the finals I
knew on the first sentence. (It had to do with someone looking for a new roommate
and thinking "GWM" in the personals meant "guy with money.") At
least that time I wasn't playing so I could sit in the audience secure that I didn't have
to embarrass myself. Of course, now I've just revealed it. (By the way, I
haven't seen that movie either.)
More Big-Time Comebacks: It wasn't quite like the game
against Shelby Foote last year,
but in the last game we were down 120-30 through 7 tossups to Indiana - and also 100-0, I
believe - and then outscored them 310-40 the rest of the way.
