April 30, 2002

Okay, this is the last update.   Quiz bowl elections "yesterday" (I'm writing this at quarter past twelve, so it's hardly that, but the dating system on this website gets very technical... probably why that's the only dating I ever have to worry about... *rimshot*... okay, that was another reason).  Total farce, basically.  Rather than start with president as last year, Mike and Jan ran against each other for secretary to start the night, ostensibly because neither cared much about the presidency.  Jan prevailed in a runoff (said runoff consisted of best-three-of-five rock-paper-scissors... do not ask).  Then came historian, which Colby and Rob ran for, mostly, I suspect, because they wanted a position.  Rob won in what I would term something of an upset... but don't blame me, I voted for "Not Jada Black."
Then came treasurer, in which I ran unopposed.  It would have been nice to have not held the presidential election last, because with Mike running virtually unopposed (against two freshmen, neither of whom really cared) he easily won, whereas I might have been able to give him a run, and then fall back on treasurer if I lost, à la Jan last year.  Whatever, I'll be president next year barring what I would term a massive upset, as I'll be easily the most senior member (at least in years + tournaments attended + practices attended + exec board experience, as I guess there are ties in years alone).

This may actually be the last update of the month, so let's make it a good one.  Oh, sorry, it's just my WinAmp playlists.   There's the 406-song main one (still less than half the MP3s on my computer, but the only ones I really ever listen to), and also the new spinoff "Sad Bastard Music," for when I'm more down.

There's also new lyrics: Qualified.  An MP3 may follow, but not anytime soon because I'm not overly pleased with the music right now.  Maybe if I gain some talent.  I kinda like the lyrics, though, so you can settle for those for now.

For once I'm not complaining about how hot this room is.  Just got back from the Cubs game, which was pretty awesome.   We sat in the bleachers for the first time, and it really is a different world out there.  Ric said on the El back - and I happen to agree - that he doesn't feel like he can sit anywhere else at Wrigley now.  You'd just feel like you were missing something.
The shitty cold part involves the rain at the start.  When I left Norris it had just started to rain, and I got semi-wet going up to Kemper.  By the time we got to Tech, though, the rain had tapered off, and by the time we got to Wrigley it seemed like everything was going to be cool.
Then the rain came back... and kept going.  It probably rained for 30-45 minutes, delaying the game by about half an hour and drenching everyone in the bleachers, the three of us (me, Ric, and Drew) very much included.  The temperature proceeded to drop from 70 to 50, thus causing us to freeze our asses off.  On the other hand, the Cubs won, and 10-4 no less.  Fred McGriff actually legged out a base-clearing triple - how often do you see that?

April 24, 2002

I'm starting to get really annoyed at OfficeMax.  I went in there one Friday to get a new black print cartridge.  And they were out.  "Come back Monday."  Today I went in on Wednesday and they didn't have any.  The Lexmark 17G0050 is not that fucking popular, I'm sorry.   If they've stopped carrying them, that's one thing, but at least tell me.   It's more annoying that there isn't any other place to get one around here.  I may have to resort to buying one online, which I don't especially want to do.
Then I went to Borders to get "The Prince," which was sold out at Norris.  Just as well; I got it for four bucks.  It's not the same edition, but it's good enough.
My right speaker keeps fading in and out.  It's really annoying.

I kind of want to make a big list of movies I should see and books I should read, and spend all summer doing that.  I feel bad, particularly in the books category, that I've never found time to do these sorts of things.  It would be pretty bad-ass for quiz bowl purposes too, of course, but really I just want to see what I've been missing.  I could try and read some on the weekends, I guess, but good luck selling my parents on the idea that I should just sit around and read all summer.  Even if it were just the books and not the movies.

In honor of Day at NU, we welcome back last year's GIF.  Enjoy.

I bet you were wondering who got all the write-in votes in the ASG elections.  Well, since ASG wouldn't tell us, I can, thanks to my highly-placed sources.  I am Woodward.  Or am I Bernstein?   Hell with it.  Here they are: ASG Write-In Results.

Also, Which Member of the Suite are You?  And for that matter, Which WNUR Sports Staff Member are You?

TRASHionals this past weekend... interesting.  I'll favor you with one tidbit here that didn't make the recap: Saturday morning, registration started at 8.  This is also, thanks to not turning the alarm clock on, when we woke up.  Those of you who have shared living accomodations with me may not believe this next part, but I actually took a Six-Minute Shower (a creature long thought to be extinct) and we got there by about 8:30, in plenty of time for registration, which ended at 9, and before several other teams - a simply amazing turn of events.  I naturally made up for this shower deficiency by showering for 45 minutes this morning.

April 11, 2002

The Cubs should make their official team slogan "We Can't Score Any Fucking Runs."  Know why?  Because they can't score any fucking runs.  And frankly, it's starting to piss me off a little bit.  Okay, the team may not be much more than Sosa, McGriff, and Patterson until Alou gets back, but that's a lot better than teams with shittier lineups (think the Devil Rays or some equally pathetic franchise) have in the middle.  Surely the Cubs can get up to four or five runs a game - with the way the pitching has started the season, that ought to be enough to win three of every five, and that adds up to 95 wins or so over the full season, which would almost definitely be good enough for the playoffs.  Okay, so teams have started seasons poorly before (the A's last year) and still made the playoffs - even won 100 games as the A's did - but someone besides Patterson needs to start hitting consistently.  And to think that last year this kid was the only guy who couldn't park the ball somewhere.

The poll on ESPN.com right now is "Which feat is the most difficult to accomplish?"  The choices are "Grand Slam - golf," "Grand Slam - tennis," "Horse racing Triple Crown," "MLB Triple Crown," "Undefeated men's college hoops season," and "Undefeated NFL season."  The question is, why isn't this obvious?  To my knowledge, every single one of these has happened save one - Grand Slam in golf.   Yes, if we're not talking career, I realize, but they've got to be referring to in one year.  So why is Undefeated NFL season winning?  It has happened.  Maybe only once, but it has.  Okay, most of these haven't been done in years (last Triple Crown in baseball, 1967; last Triple Crown in horse racing, 1978; last undefeated men's college hoops season, 1976; last undefeated NFL season, 1971), but they have been done.  On the other hand, only five golfers have even won the career Slam, and only Tiger won the four modern majors in succession (and it's not technically the Slam because he didn't do it all in one year).  Come on.  At least voters had the good sense to rank the tennis Grand Slam last.

April 11, 2002

The streak... is over.  Currently WeatherBug tells me it's 75, which I happen to believe.  It is unbelievable outside.   The only clouds in the sky are wispy cirrostratus - otherwise it's blue, bright as anything.  I'm wearing shorts.
The kicker to all that, of course, is that the last day I spent entirely in Evanston about which I could say this was October 14, 2000.  That's right - three days shy of 18 months ago.  Absolutely incredible.
Of course, the forecast is that this is as warm as it's going to be in the next week, and it'll be doing a lot of raining.  At least it's supposed to stay mostly in the mid-to-high 60s during the day, though the storms ought to lessen the niceness of that.
    But hey... I'm wearing shorts.

Oh, TRASHionals this weekend.  Wish us luck - we're better than last year's team, at least...

April 7, 2002

Two new movie reviews: The Rookie (good) and Van Wilder (bad).

April 5, 2002

Good lord, not another song.   Well, technically, no, it's just the recording of Song for the Girl in My Class.

April 3, 2002

Gosh, I'm just a song machine, aren't I?  Too bad they all suck.  Anyway, here are the lyrics for Song for the Girl in My Class, as I try to get a decent version of it recorded.

April 2, 2002

Ooh, song time.  Two new lyrics: Unacquainted and Three AM in Evanston (named more for when I wrote it than anything).  Also, you can now get MP3s right here!   Check out Last Train to You (my favorite), Unacquainted (Marc's favorite), and Three AM in Evanston (no one's favorite - perhaps Jan's).

There's more! View last month's updates.
