   Read the review for Traffic.

Say, BigFlax.com visitor, do you have a website?  You do?  Well, how would you like to link to BigFlax.com from your site?
     Come on, please?

Anyway, if anyone out there does have a link to BigFlax.com (I should be so lucky), let me know so that I can make a link to your page.

What with all the stuff I do at WNUR, I've put up a button at the top which links to all my WNUR work.  You can read the bi-weekly analyst column I write, see what I've done on the radio, and all that jazz.

Read the review for The Gift.

And just when you thought it might never happen for real... it has.  There's a new Number One, and it's the movie that was already my #1 movie soundtrack/score of all time.

Read the review for Thirteen Days.

January 16, 2001

Well, after a long and incredibly painful process which involved first getting a new hard drive (though I did get ten extra gigs out of the deal) and then having my parents send me the FrontPage CD, BigFlax.com is back.  Not that it was gone, of course, but those of you who have wondered why the poll hasn't changed in a while now know why.  Anyway, here's the news.
The Quiz Bowl team went to two, count 'em two, tournaments over the weekend.  I was on the A team for both of them, which was pretty nice - but that meant I got my first taste of playing grad students (or in the case of the second tournament, people who were in their thirties and even older), which can be somewhat demoralizing.  Here are the results.

MLK Tournament (Saturday)

Round One: Michigan State 150, Northwestern A 75
Round Two: Northwestern A 115, Northwestern C 35
Round Three: Kentucky 245, Northwestern A 50
Round Four: Northwestern A 125, Illinois B 60
Round Five: BYE
Round Six: Illinois A 170, Northwestern A 95
Round Seven: Northwestern A 100, Nam/Jejjala 95
Round Eight: BYE
Round Nine: Chicago A 415, Northwestern A 90
Round Ten: Northwestern A 120, Northwestern B 10
Round Eleven: Chicago C 65, Northwestern A 60
Round Twelve: Northwestern A 190, Western Ontario 70
Round Thirteen: Pittsburgh 125, Northwestern A 105
Round Fourteen: Chicago B 165, Northwestern A 110
Round Fifteen: Chicago D 150, Northwestern A 60
Final Results: Ninth place (5-8)

A couple of quick explanations about the MLK tournament: Nam/Jejjala is actually a two-person team (they're pretty good though - they beat our B team 285-5); we lost to Chicago C on the last question because we couldn't get any of the three bonus questions right.
Now a couple of pre-emptive explanations for the Ann B. Davis tournament.  ABD is a Trash tournament - meaning the questions are almost entirely pop culture and sports.  Also, rather than having school names as above, teams have names that reference pop culture.  Our name, as you will see below, is apparently a Golden Girls reference (I didn't come up with it).  Most of the teams are actually composed of people who have already graduated college, something I found mildly irking.   I do well at Trash, and was the number five overall scorer, earning me a spot in the All-Star Game, where I answered one question right (on the comic strip Non Sequitur).   Here are the round scores.

Round One: Picture it, Sicily, 1922 217, The Love Child of Paul Lynde and Charles Nelson Reilly 181
Round Two: Picture it, Sicily, 1922 410, Geraldo Rivera, Madonna, and a Diseased Yak 30
Round Three: Friends of Clyde 368, Picture it, Sicily, 1922 215
Round Four: Dude, Where's My Gerbil 410, Picture it, Sicily, 1922 120
Round Five: Picture it, Sicily, 1922 345, The Concrete Donkeys 45
Round Six: BYE
Round Seven: Picture it, Sicily, 1922 395, Alanis Coulier 176
Playoff Round One: J4) Oh Buzzer, Where Art Thou 211, G3) Picture it, Sicily, 1922 205
Playoff Round Two: J2) Uri Geller, Superstar 325, G3) Picture it, Sicily, 1922 160
Playoff Round Three: G3) Picture it, Sicily, 1922 370, J3) Planarian 9 from Outer Space 305
Playoff Round Four: J1) Fever Dog 460, G3) Picture it, Sicily, 1922 140
Final Results: Sixth place (5-5)
All-Stars: Robert Flaxman, Tyler Johnson

And that's that.  There's also a new movie review: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

January 6, 2001

New feature: CD review.  Here's the Offspring's latest, Conspiracy of One.

January 4, 2001

Well, it's 2001 and yet I keep writing 2000 in dates.  Better stop that before I write my next check... anyway, the college football season has finally come to a close, so it's time to put the wraps on BigFlax.com's coverage.  The final results of the BigFlax.com College Bowl Challenge can be found here; my picks and results - including going from a woeful 5-10 record to a cozy 13-12 in the last ten games - can be found here.  The final BigFlax.com Top 20 Poll for the 2000-01 year can be found here.

January 2, 2001

A new movie review is up - The Emperor's New Groove - and also check out the BigFlax.com Bowl Challenge, which appears to be coming down right to the wire.

There's more! View last month's updates.
